They originated in the 1980s and are a crossbreed of many strains including the American Shorthair, British Shorthair, and the Abyssinian. The California Spangled Cat was originally bred by Paul Arnold Casey, Jr, a Hollywood playwright, scriptwriter, and author after he returned from Tanzania where he was working with Louis Leakey in the 1970s novel "Open the Coffin" which chronicled his journey in Africa and sparked his desire to create the spotted house-leopard.
